Graham Norton Announces Replacement Presenter for BBC Chat Show
‘I Apologise in Advance,’ Says Irish Presenter’s Stand-in
Graham Norton will step away temporarily from his BBC One chat show as his comedy tour takes him overseas.
The Irish host is taking an extended break next month to perform An Evening With Graham Norton in Australia. Rather than pausing the show, the BBC has decided to continue production, appointing Claudia Winkleman as his stand-in during his absence.
The Announcement
The news was revealed on The Graham Norton Show on Friday (10 January). Winkleman, who hosts Traitors, appeared as a guest alongside stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Billy Porter, and Myles Smith. Upon hearing the announcement, Winkleman humorously remarked:
“I apologise in advance.”
History of Stand-ins
This marks the second time Norton has been replaced on his own chat show. In 2019, Jack Whitehall stepped in as host when Norton was unable to fulfill his duties.
Winkleman has also substituted for Norton before. In 2021, she took over his BBC Radio 2 Saturday morning show after he departed following over a decade of hosting.
Reflecting on this opportunity, Winkleman said:
“I’m not often speechless, but the chance to be with the wonderful Radio 2 listeners every Saturday has left me, quite frankly, gobsmacked. I hope my voice comes back in time for the first show as I can no longer simply rely on a fake tan and a fringe. There’s nobody I’d rather be with at the weekend—it’s a privilege and an honour.”
Winkleman on The Traitors
While discussing the success of her game show The Traitors on The Graham Norton Show, Winkleman shared her gratitude:
“I am always very nervous that people aren’t watching and then incredibly grateful that they are. I feel about Traitors like people feel about an offspring – you’re so glad when people love it.”
About The Traitors
The BBC released the third season of the popular reality series on New Year’s Day. The show follows contestants living together in a castle in the Scottish Highlands, with a secret group of “Traitors” conspiring to eliminate others without being detected.
The final survivors vie for a life-changing sum of money. If a Traitor remains undetected until the end, they claim the prize for themselves.
The current season has been as captivating as ever, with viewers hooked as the Faithfuls continue to mistake their fellow Faithfuls for Traitors.
